I'm a veteran hard surface modeler and CG supervisor. I've been in the VFX industry since 1995. Long time Maya user (since 1997, when it was still beta) but since Blender 2.80 came out, I just (almost) stopped using Maya and Blender is now my primary tool. As this chain grows, I will try to show you how we use Blender at Real by Fake to do our VFXs on real projects. My goal is to help you learn how to make top notch modelling and VFX technics that are at the level of the VFX film industry. Feel free to check me out on IMDB (see link).

Well, at least you motivated me to start my own project, it is just a character for now, nothing too big, I'm going on baby steps, but it is better than doing nothing, thank you for being a good example for the community.

Way to go! The open communication si really appreciated. All in all, money is the means to achieve goals, and the goal is to get Tiki done! I feel this is a nice lesson to learn for the Blender community as well (remember the feature film project that the Blender Foundation had in mind - not so easy to get such a thing done). Blender is free but it still needs money and support to be developed.

Works in 3.6 so it should work in 3.5. Did you check in the tool tab of the viewport?

@@BlenderBob yep, loaded as an addon. It loads (no errors) then I cannot find it. I tried someone's suggestion in the comments to go through ChatGPT and fix the version, but it gives errors upon install this way. I also tried to run it as a .py script (same)

Hey Bob, great vid. I have a question and I can't really get answer to it. I'm working on an animation series, which will be rendered out with a GPU render engine, Octane. 80% of objects won't be highly detailed, but there will be lot of them. Which type of topology method would be more hardware friendly? As you mentioned, triangles doesn't necessarily mean less faces, but as game engines work with triangles and are calculated by GPU, would it mean that it will be better to use triangle meshes when rendering with GPU? I'm trying to figure out what would give me better economy at GPU memory and render times, Thanks!
Octane is a path tracer so it doesn’t render like a game engine, even if it’s GPU. So it won’t matter much. The important thing about path tracers is that everything fits into RAM memory, including textures (which is usually the problem with Cycles as it doesn’t do mipmapping. Not sure if Octane does.

Wow thanks for making this! Learned a lot, absolutely a masterclass. The reason why it's important to have evenly-spaced topology finally "clicked" for me. I would've been doing pushups for giving you a model with holding edges before.

I would love to see your test comparing houdini to blenders water and Firer. Are you still going to be comping in Blender? or are you guys going to be using Nuke?
There’s no comparison between Blender and Houdini for water sim. I talked about it in one clip I did about Flexseal. Even Flip Fluid addon is not as good.
We’re going to comp in Nuke.
If you select an edge, than an other 2/3/4 etc loops from it. Control, shift +selects the next one 2/3/4 etc loops from that. In your case doesn't matter to click 8 times, bit with more dense topology its usefull.

Nice tips. By the way, when I'm doing a planet, I'm also using a cube instead of a UV sphere. Just the standard cube, then I give it a Subdivision Surface modifier with Level 4 or even 6, then add a Cast modifier with Factor 1 to make it fully spherical. For the planetary texture which is usually a 2:1 ratio image, instead of using UVs for it I set the projection of the Image Texture node from Flat to Sphere. Et voilà, perfect planet 😁 For the Texture Coordinate you can either choose Generated or Object, the only difference it makes is which way the "front" of the texture faces, in X or Y direction.
Yep! That would work too. Many steps though. Try the extra objects addon. Comes with Blender. :-)
@@BlenderBob Yes, I know the extra objects and have them enabled... I should have mentioned I do it this way with modifiers to keep it procedural. Of course when I want to apply them I could as well use the round cube with the "Quadsphere" preset. Although for a destructive workflow I think it goes quite fast with a default cube as well: Ctrl+4 to subdivide level 4, then Ctrl+A > Visual Geometry to Mesh, then Tab into Edit Mode and Shift+Alt+S for the To Sphere tool and dragging the mouse until it reaches 1. Just a few quick shortcuts and two mouseclicks. Fast and easy.
Thank you for these tips and workflows. I've been doing 3d for 15 years, and I still have a hard time keeping good topo. It's hard to remember all these guidelines.

tl dr; not gonna subdivide? you don't have to care about topology/quads/ngons if it renders well. don't worry about topology unless you have to worry about topology.
It’s not always about if it renders well or not. It’s also about displacement maps, simulations and 3D texture painting. All three versions render well.

There's no fixed method! All of them are good for a specific case. I done them all in all ways on all tasks possible with 3DCGi. When I was young I pursued the perfect topology and as professional I was forced to use all the crap imaginable... and even that crap has it advantages :) The key is know exactly were and how to use each method.
Which is pretty much what I explained both at the beginning and the end. :-)

I think what matters most is that the project gets finished, the Blender world will benefit from yet another finished movie a lot more than from something that died from lack of available resources. The way you considered the human factor and decided to pay everybody who contributed is outstanding.
Crazy development. It sounds promising. How high is the budget for this production? If I understand corretly it's now impossible for "outsiders" to contribute to the project anymore?
Budget is not done yet but it will be more than I ever dreamed on. No help for outside Quebec except for rare exceptions
Its make me think a little bit on my animation short that I am working on. In the first "What is that" shot. How did you made the hair? And how did you rig it? Because my short relie on hair animation. "Lucky Luke" so you can imagen. The new hair system is was far as I know, not yet rig/animatable. Witch make it hard. And also what is the render format for your project? Keep it up. No mater who are making it, I am looking forward to watch it.
Check for Munnor on X. He did the hair for Tiki. We render in Cycles at 2048x1024

I think this is an excellent decision. Such ambition to create a communuty feature. You have been such a great driving force behind this project which I think is reflected in the decision of your backers to continue their support through this change. To retrospecitvely reward all of the contributors who have worked on Tiki so far is outstanding. They will always be recongnised as part of the team which created this project. I will look out for all of their names. Now that Real By Fake have such a solid base to work with, I am sure that their professional structure and experience will make Tiki an historic moment in blender's development. I hope that you keep some involvement as a producer alongside your directorial role as that is arguably a more difficult task at which you have clearly excelled. Congratations succeeding at the monumental task of keeping this project alive. I very much look forward to seeing Tiki and wish you every success with this adapted direction.
I can't see the edges in Sculpt mode, Is it because I am using different version of blender?
Did you turn on the wireframe visibility before entering sculpt mode?
I bet YOU'RE the one who is frustrated. How hard it must be to see this project take such a turn. But still, so much better than dropping it! I hope it comes out looking better than you imagined.
Yes and no. It was too much to handle at this point. And with Real by FAKE team we will end up with a much higher quality project
